Karnataka has a rich diversity of rice, especially medicine rice varieties. Unfortunately, the entire genetic resources are getting extinct, as the crop species are no longer cultivated. Reviving and restoring this valuable resource is most important, lest we lose this wonderful cultural heritage.

Sahaja Samrudha has identified and documented twelve medicinal rice diversity of Karnataka and has combed the entire state, where inter-specific diversity is significant. The data collection included ecological and cultural context of the rice varieties and carefully recorded and incorporated into conservation. A most comprehensive collection of rice genetic resources was conducted. The germplasm collection is an extremely valuable resource that aims to be preserved, while also making the seed resources available for farmers and breeders. The varieties that have been identified and being multiplied are Kari kalave, Kari batha, Ambemore, sannakki, Athi karaya, Kayame, Byravadlu and Kari gajivile. Work has already begun in sowing the varieties on plots in the farms of interested farmers. This would serve as a model farm to raise awareness among local people of the need to conserve medicinal plants.
