A decentralized research was planned
and focused on to improve the performance of local genetic
resources, participatory crop improvement experiments are
implemented in farmers' field. Participatory planning and
design of the research is carried out with farmer groups to
address village-specific problems. Standardization of sustainable
farming techniques and characterisation of traditional varieties
are in the process. Participatory Research conducted on field
include: Characterization and evaluation of traditional seed
varieties Demonstration plots of finger millet and other minor
millets Promotion of legume culture
Characterization and
evaluation of traditional seed varieties
|
|
Characterization and evaluation was conducted
on traditional varieties of ragi, paddy, deep
water paddy, wheat and finger millet. The study
was undertaken to study the phenotypic and agronomic
expressions. The exercise was conducted to involve
farmers in purification and improvement of the
different varieties. This study would also enhance
the existing knowledge on landraces.

Demonstration and Multiplication
of Minor millets
|
|
Demo plots are used as a means to educate farmers
on non-usage of chemical inputs, crop monitoring
and management techniques. This addresses food
security through out the year.
The plots also serve as a model to farmers and
neighboring villages. The farmers with the help
of the staff collected the varieties specific
to that region, which were on the brink of extinction.
These varieties were sown in demo plots for multiplication.
During harvest the best earheads are selected
and seeds are collected and stored for the consecutive
season.

Fox tail millet
varieties
sown in demo plot are - Kempu navane, Kuchchu
navane, Jotagu navane, Hullu navane, Halu navane
and Chandra navane
Little millet varieties- Kari
same, Karapu same and Hejjame
Barnyard millet varieties
-Kempu and Beli odalu and Proso millet
These varieties are multiplied in Oodeyaraplaya,
Kollegal Taluk and are distributed for further
multiplication.

Promotion of
legume culture
|
|
Legumes, which include beans, soybeans,
peas, supply protein not only in our daily
diet but through their root nodules they
preserve the nitrogen balance in the soil.
Sahaja Samrudha has not only encouraged
cultivation of pulses crop but has also
identified the importance of green manure
species like velvet beans, indigo and sesbania
sps and has validated through experimentation
has been undertaken drastically. With the
dissemination of legume culture knowledge
more than three thousand farmers have been
benefited and have saved money that was
spent on fertilizers and labour.
